Three Tips for Watering During Hot Weather

Summer has definitely arrived! Record temperatures are already happening all over the country. Knowing which of your plants prefer sun or shade; how deep their roots will grow and the signs of heat stress will help your garden survive harsh weather.

It is time for gardeners to develop a plan of action for taking care of their plants during the hot, dry months to come.

Grower Lori offers these three tips for keeping your garden green :

  • Water early in the morning or later in the evening, not the middle of the day
  • No overhead watering or you risk burning the plants
  • Lay an inch of mulch down in your beds to retain moisture, keep the roots cooler, keep the weeds at bay and amend your soil as it breaks down

Use caution when watering: some of the symptoms of heat stress, such as dropping leaves, mimic the symptoms of overwatering. Call or stop by the nursery if you're not sure which of the two you may be seeing in your garden.
